The Musketeers got off to a slow start falling behind the Cougars 9 – 2 early in the first quarter. As the quarter came to an end, Isabell Claywell hit a field goal that closed the gap to 12-10.
Starting the second quarter, the Lady Cougars pushed the lead back to 6 before getting into foul trouble. The Musketeers managed to cut into the lead after Kendra Sill made a field goal and split a pair of 1 and 1’s. Lily Crumpton ended the half by making a pair of free throws, cutting the deficit to 1. The score was 20-19 at the half.
The Musketeers struggled in the third quarter, only scoring on a 3 point basket by Shelbi Patton and a free throw by Sill. The quarter ended 29-23 with the Cougars leading.
Midway through the fourth quarter, trailing 33-23, the Musketeers came alive. After two 3 pointers by Claywell, and 5 points by Patton, the Musketeers trailed the Cougars by 3. With under 15 seconds left in the game, Claywell hit another 3 giving the Musketeers their first lead of the game. Unfortunately, the Cougars fought their way down the court and made the winning basket with 4.4 seconds to go. Claywell made one last attempt that fell short just as the buzzer sounded . The Musketeers fall to 2-1 for the season.
Isabell Claywell led all scorers with 15, followed by Shelbi Patton with 8, Kendra Sill with 7, Lily Crumpton with 5, and Cayley Graves with 4.
The Lady Musketeers will be in action again tomorrow at Austin.
